The Jackson County Legislature named Phil LeVota to serve as interim county executive after a vote Monday afternoon.

The Jackson County Legislature voted 5-4 to appoint LeVota, a Kansas City-based attorney and former chair of the Jackson County Democratic Party, as interim county executive Monday afternoon after interviewing nine candidates in a public hearing. Legislators reached a consensus on LeVota’s appointment after a single round of votes.

The Jackson County Legislature will appoint an interim county executive to serve until November 2026. Former County Executive Frank White Jr. was recalled by voters on Sept. 30, and former Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes is serving for up to 30 days as temporary county executive.

Three hours of questioning by Jackson County legislators at the Jackson County Courthouse came to a close on Monday with the appointment of an interim county executive.

The federal complaint, filed earlier this month, accuses the man charged in the Napoleon Township crash last spring and his employers of gross negligence. It also asks the court for a $50 million judgment.
