The new moon on Saturday, Aug. 23, will be a seasonal “black moon” — a rare occurrence when four new moons fall within a single season. It has an intruiging future echo.

The new moon occurs on Aug. 22 at 11:06 p.m. PT and Aug. 23 at 2:06 a.m. ET. It comes down to timing. A black moon is the fourth new moon in a season that has had three full moons.
“No other planet has as many small inner moons as Uranus, and their complex inter-relationships with the rings hint at a chaotic history that blurs the boundary between a ring system and a system of moons,” SETI Institute researcher Matthew Tiscareno said in a statement for NASA.
