The Royal Liverpool Hospital has activated its 'full capacity protocol' as it takes emergency measures to deal with the soaring numbers coming into its emergency department. A notice has revealed some patients have waited as long as 91 hours in Accident and Emergency before being treated.

Managers have urged people to only go to A&E in a genuine medical emergency. A spokesman for the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said emergency measures had been put in place which would allow managers to call for extra help and to make changes to ensure patient safety.
