The conclusion of a criminal case against Alec Baldwin in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer may clear the way for a related civil lawsuit by relatives of the deceased woman and efforts to depose the actor under oath.

Prosecutors have abandoned efforts to appeal a New Mexico judge's decision to toss the involuntary manslaughter charge against Baldwin, ending the botched case.

Halyna Hutchins' family spoke out after a "Rust" prosecutor withdrew her notice of appeal against Alec Baldwin.

The appeal had asked the court to reinstate charges, including involuntary manslaughter, against Alec Baldwin.

Alec Baldwin's "Rust" manslaughter case is officially over. On Monday, special prosecutor Kari Morrissey withdrew the State's appeal that was filed on Nov. 21.

The case against Baldwin collapsed earlier this year after just three days, following claims that prosecutors withheld key evidence from the defense

Rust movie armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was in charge of the prop guns on the Western project, was sentenced to 18 months in prison, the maximum penalty, in April. Director Joel Souza was also injured in the incident and later returned to complete filming Rust with Baldwin. The movie was released on Nov. 20.

An attorney representing the family of "Rust" cinematographer Halyna Hutchins criticized New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez on Tuesday — calling him "the Grinch" — for blocking an appeal of a judge's decision to toss a criminal case against actor Alec Baldwin.
