Superhero movies appear to be back. After Superman opened to a storming box office a couple of weeks back, Fantastic Four: First Steps, by a whisker, has done even better. But damn, it was close.

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” grossed $118 million at the domestic box office over the weekend—largely meeting earlier projections, but still placing it behind “Superman” for the biggest superhero film opening of 2025 so far.

First Steps and James Gunn’s Superman hold very different positions within their respective franchises (the former is the 37 th movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and technically set outside of the canon;
First Steps is coming in lighter than projections in its first box office weekend with $117.6 million. Still records were broken.
The dust has yet to settle on Marvel’s latest MCU entry, but Fantastic Four: First Steps is off to a strong start this weekend. In terms of critical reception, it’s doing about the same as James Gunn’s Superman, at least as far as Rotten Tomatoes is concerned.
