When a door no longer latches properly, it usually means the striker plate and the throw on the door do not line up. (The throw is the part of the lock that fits into the hole in the striker plate).
A quick fix for this is to move the strike plate over a little bit. Step 1: Use a screwdriver to remove the strike plate from the door jamb. Shut the door.
However, the fix is done fairly easily by simply adjusting the door strike plate. This is the small part where the lock bolt goes into the hole in the frame.
You can do the same with the strike plate–the metal plate that receives the latch and deadbolt on the frame side of the door—as if anything sticky gets in there, it can also jam things up.
