Gulp! lures have only been in stores for about 60 days, so the jury still is out on whether they will out-catch live bait and soft plastics. But they already have some anglers hooked.

This week’s angling action has been highlighted by two great catch-and-release fisheries, one on each side of the peninsula.

One of my favorite methods of fishing is with "soft baits." We commonly refer to them as soft plastic baits, but manufacturers now use a wide variety of materials in the making of these popular lures.

The anglers cast Gulp! baits and Saltwater Assassins on the still-darkened flats, and boated 20-fish limits of top-of-the-slot trout each day. On Sunday, their 20th fish came aboard at 8:40 a.m.

The fish that we are targeting with these baits are whiting and pompano and their mouths are relatively small. That is why I recommend using a smaller amount of bait while targeting these fish.

And this week, the summer flounder bite was on in a big way at Warwick Light. How good was the fluke fishing?

Holdover trout have been caught with salmon eggs, Gulp pinched crawlers, or minijigs. The largemouth and smallmouth bass bite has kicked into action with jigs, worms, or small crankbaits.

4 At Lake Hamilton, the bass bite is good on the Hamilton Chain. The fish have moved inside the grass lines and plastic worms, swimbaits and flipping creature baits are producing.
