A federal judge on Monday skewered a $1.5 billion settlement between artificial intelligence company Anthropic and authors who allege nearly half million books had been illegally pirated to train chatbots,

Anthropic has agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle claims that it illegally downloaded a massive trove of pirated books to train its language models.

The settlement is the largest payout in the history of U.S. copyright cases and could lead more A.I. companies to pay rights holders for use of their works.
