On Tuesday NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy announced a commitment to build a fission reactor on the lunar surface. NASA has been exploring nuclear power for the moon for years, but the endeavor got a boost late last year in an order from President Donald Trump to build one to ensure “American space superiority.
A NASA astronaut on the ISS captured the Space Launch System rocket for Artemis 2, a mission that aims to bring four astronauts around the moon as soon as Feb. 6.
Back in 2024, NASA announced that the Artemis 2 mission was going to be pushed back to April 2026. Now, the agency says it could launch as early as February, with the first flight opportunity being on February 6.
NASA is closely monitoring asteroid 2024 YR4 after scientists identified a potential lunar impact path in 2032. While it won’t destroy the Moon, the event could reshape its surface and change how future lunar missions are planned.
