TAIPEI, May 13 (Reuters) - Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) nominated lawmaker Puma Shen on Wednesday as its candidate for Taipei mayor, a man who has been sanctioned by China for what Beijing has described as his support for "separatism".
But Beijing began blocking Taiwan's participation in 2017, after then-President Tsai Ing-wen won office, for her refusal to agree to China's position that both China and Taiwan are part of "one China". Current President Lai Ching-te has continued Tsai's policy.
Taiwanese officials fear even the most subtle rhetorical change in policy from Trump could imperil a delicate status quo that has held for decades.
