NJ Transit said the president's action will help prevent a strike for at least 120 days. After that, either of the parties or the governor can request to extend for an additional 120 days.

NJ Transit’s contingency plans would take effect on Monday in the event of a strike. It would provide temporary bus service to and from New York that can accommodate 20% of the daily rail ridership.

NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri and union officials had both suggested there was a road to a deal being made. “We have 29 hours left.” Kolluri remarked late yesterday.

NJ Transit leadership, though, disputes the union's data, saying the engineers have average total earnings of $135,000 annually, with the highest earners exceeding $200,000.

That's not acceptable. NJ Transit officials and the union’s leadership must convene as quickly as possible to resume negotiations, end the strike and resume train service.
