Germany's right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD) on Monday urged "a different approach to peace and diplomacy" for ending the war in Ukraine, calling on Chancellor Friedrich Merz to embark on a visit to Moscow for talks.

MOSCOW, Sept 21 (Reuters) - The Kremlin said on Monday that the far-right Alternative for Germany's (AfD) first place in a state election in northeastern Germany was in large part due to Berlin no longer buying cheap Russian gas and choosing to buy expensive US energy instead.

AfD Saxony-Anhalt is a racist extremist group, according to the German state's intelligence agency. The party may well trounce its rivals in this weekend's state election.

That will be the second big result for the AfD this month, and the ruling conservative Christian Democrat Union party’s worst showing since 1949. Friedrich Merz, Germany’s chancellor, called the vote “a disaster”,
