Heavy winds that swept through Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on Sunday night started “rapid fire spread” after a relatively slow day of growth, according to fire officials.

Conditions aren’t likely to improve for fire crews. More dry, hot days with temperatures in the 90s, coupled with low humidity, are expected. That heat dries out vegetation during the day, priming it to burn at night. Lightning is also likely this week, risking starting more hot spots.

Wildfires continue to plague the Western Slope as crews are tackling several blazes on CO Highway 141 near Gateway. Two of the fires, Wright Draw and Turner Gulch, are mapped at 33.5 and 83 acres, respectively,

More than a dozen fires are creating heavy smoke, with more lightning and gusty winds expected for parts of the Western Slope Friday.

Evacuations ordered in Montrose County, CO, due to the South Rim Fire, which has grown to 2,892 acres with 0% containment.

There are four wildfires burning around Colorado's western slope, including one that is in Utah but nearing the state line. The biggest fire in Colorado currently is within the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

New evacuation orders at 3:50 p.m. Monday are for all private land areas between Mile Markers 128 and 131 along Highway 141 in Gateway. That's in addition to previous evacuation orders for all private land and areas between Mile Markers 120 and 128 along Highway 141.
