The U.S. Congress on Wednesday delivered Republican President Donald Trump legislation requiring the detention of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally who are accused of theft, with a significant number of Democrats voting in favor.

The Laken Riley Act, named for an Athens, Ga., nursing student murdered last year by an undocumented man, passed in the House by a 253 to 156 vote. Forty-six Democrats, including six from California, and 217 Republicans voted for the bill. There was no GOP opposition, while 156 Democrats voted no.

The House cleared legislation Wednesday that would impose stricter penalties on undocumented immigrants who commit crimes in the United States, sending the first bill of this Congress to President Donald Trump in his second administration.

The House voted 263 to 156 to approve the Laken Riley act, sending the measure to Trump for his signature. The measure would make it easier for federal immigration officials to detain and deport those without legal status who are charged with specific crimes.
