State leaders targeted Austin ISD with investigations over student-led protests against the presence and tactics of ICE.

Heightened Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in recent months has sparked waves of fear and uncertainty for many across the country, especially in Texas. The Lone Star State is home to the second-largest immigrant population in the U.S. , with approximately 5.1 million foreign-born residents as of 2022.

A rare winter storm brought snow, sleet and ice to North Texas, breaking records at DFW Airport and snarling roads and flights across the area.

Now, a new state law passed last legislative session is paving the way for broader partnership with the federal entity.

Mauro Henriquez, an 18-year-old Houston ISD student and team captain for his school’s soccer team, has been detained by ICE since Dec. 16 and is set to be deported along with his father, according to the federal agency.

The rumors come as both ICE raids escalate and counter protests emerge across the country.

The measles​ cases at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center were detected Friday, Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement to CBS News.

More than 30 Texas companies, including some around San Antonio and Austin, are part of a Pentagon program that Homeland Security can use to build detention sites around the nation.
