According to a report from CNBC, Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) is making a bold move to solidify its dominance in the artificial intelligence space and plans to invest $80 billion in AI-enabled data centers by the end of its fiscal 2025.

The software giant's president, Brad Smith, said Friday in a blog post that more than half of the $80 billion would be spent in the U.S.

Much of the $80B will go towards data centers to be used for artificial intelligence, as AI progress has resulted in the need for “large-scale infrastructure investments that serve as the essential foundation of AI innovation and use,” Microsoft Vice President Brad Smith wrote in the post.

With those whopping returns who could argue with the premis... oh wait The AI datacenter spending splurge looks likely to continue in 2025, with Microsoft alone saying it will invest $80 billion this year on building out infrastructure to train and deploy AI models.

The tech giant has pledged that all data centers serving its cloud by this year will have power purchase agreements for 100 percent low-carbon energy.
