YouTube is the largest streaming service by far in the U.S. At this time, the cause of the outage is unknown. Mashable reached out to Google for more information (YouTube is owned by Google), and we'll update this story if we receive more information.
Feb 17 (Reuters) - YouTube said on Tuesday it has resolved an issue that briefly affected access to the video-sharing platform, after outage-tracking website Downdetector reported widespread global disruptions.
YouTube users were having trouble accessing the platform due to issues with the platform's recommendations system.
In a statement posted to the official TeamYouTube X account, the company revealed that the outage was caused by a problem with the recommendations system. This algorithmic system is responsible for offering you videos it thinks you'll want to watch based on your past viewing habits. The company provided additional details on a Google support page.
For an hour, users were met with the message, "Something went wrong. Try again."
YouTube went down on Tuesday night, with more than 300,000 users experiencing technical difficulties, according to DownDetector. Problems for the digital video platform began around 5 p.m. PT, and some users saw services partially restored as early as about 6:00 p.
“We’re aware some of you are having issues accessing YouTube right now. We’ll provide updates as soon as we have them," Google said in a statement.
