All eyes were on No. 2 South Carolina and No. 5 LSU on Friday as they squared off inside Colonial Life Arena. Ahead 51-41 entering the fourth quarter, Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley praised her team’s defensive efforts.

Staley has not been publicly connected to any WNBA head coaching jobs. In NBA history, no woman has ever served as a full-time head coach. Lisa Boyer, a current USC assistant coach, was the first woman to hold any sort of coaching position in the NBA, assisting the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2001-02.

Of course, it was a disappointing turn of events. Nonetheless, coach Dawn Staley knows the highly-anticipated matchup will be worth all the hype because of the intense rivalry between these programs.
