ACLU sues to stop Trump policy that allows immediate deportation of some immigrants. The new policy could pave the way for mass expulsions.

An immigration group sued on Wednesday to block President Donald Trump's move to expand fast-track deportations under his pledge to remove millions of people who are in the country illegally. People facing fast-track deportations do not have access to an attorney and are unable to present evidence against their removal from the U.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sued Wednesday over President Trump’s expansion of a program that allows immigration officials to carry out swift deportations. Trump’s Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday issued a rule enabling expedited removals to take place nationwide for migrants who cannot prove they have been in the country for two years.

Plaintiffs in the ACLU’s lawsuit argue the president’s executive order banning birthright citizenship is unconstitutional.

Put simply, under Trump’s order, the children of most undocumented immigrants wouldn’t be US citizens, nor would the children of people in the country on student, work, or tourist visas. This is more than a reinterpretation of the 14th Amendment — it’s an attempt to do away with the jus soli principle that undergirds US citizenship.
