NEW DELHI, (ANI) – India has strongly urged China to ensure that its upstream activities on the Brahmaputra River do not adversely impact downstream states, following reports of a mega dam project under construction in the Tibet region.

Sources said India was not informed by the Chinese side about the construction of the Brahmaputra dam project, which is the convention between the two countries, and learnt of it from media reports – the project is to cost an estimated $137 billion.

MEA also said that India has expressed its concern to China over the hydropower project on the Brahmaputra in Tibet, urging it to ensure the interests of the downstream states are not affected.

China announced that it is building the world's largest dam in Tibet - even larger than the Three Gorges Dam, which according to NASA, has slowed the Earth's rotation by 0.06 seconds. The new dam will be built on the Brahmaputra river.
