Commuters are once again facing a fresh set of delays after last night's snowfall. The A555 Manchester Airport relief road, A533 Southern Expressway in Runcorn, Cheshire, and the A57 Snake Pass are among the larger routes to have been closed.

Parts of north-west England and northern Wales have seen severe flooding after heavy downpours, with local officials declaring a "major incident".

As the clean-up continues across the north-west of England after torrential rain led to severe flooding on New Year's Day, local politicians are calling for a probe into what warnings were given and how agencies responded to the region's third "once-in-a-hundred-year weather event" in five years.

Weather warnings for snow and ice are in force across much of the UK after severe flooding and snow caused travel disruption and school closures. Most of south-west England and Wales, coastal parts of North Wales and Merseyside and parts of north-west England and the West Midlands have a yellow snow and ice warning in place until 10am today (January 7).

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across parts of Devon and Cornwall. The first warning for snow and ice warning begins at 17:00 GMT and ends at 10:00 GMT on Tuesday.

Emergency services, councils and transport bosses across the north-west of England are bracing themselves for more severe weather, just days after the region was hit by widespread and severe flooding.
