The Pittsburgh Steelers were fortunate to have two capable quarterbacks in the 2024 season in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Of course, both were very cheap, as Fields was still on his rookie deal,

“The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to pull out all the stops, and that includes a sprinkling of Justin Fields,” Schefter said. “Later on, we could see, and are expected to see, a sprinkling of Fields to spice up what has been a stagnant offense.”

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin does not know who his starting quarterback will be in 2025. Tomlin said today that there are "a lot of unanswered questions" about the future in Pittsburgh, and that the quarterback position is one of them.

It could be a case of the Steelers wanting to re-sign Fields at the end of the season but don’t want to show too much of Fields so as to keep him off the radar of NFL teams eyeing a quarterback. This would allow the Steelers to potentially bring Fields back on the cheap to be the starter in 2025 and let Wilson walk.
