"Madame Web" received a rough reception at the box office, and Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra is blaming critics.

But Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra says critics are to blame for Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter‘s disappointing box office performance. In a new interview with the The Los Angeles Times, Vinciquerra railed against how the two superhero films were received this year by the media,

The reason was that the films were bad, Tony! Venom was a hit because he's a prominent Spider-Man character, Tony! And also each of its sequels did worse than the previous one at the box office, because all the other Sony Spider-Man-less Spider-Man films were received so poorly! Come on!

Sony's slate of Spider-Man villain spinoffs has been a creative and commercial debacle. Barring the first two instalments of Venom, starring Tom Hardy, Sony has failed to introduce a product that justifies the existence of its universe in parallel with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Kraven the Hunter is Sony Pictures’ worst movie launch since current CEO Tony Vinciquerra took the job back in 2017, he has admitted.

In 2019, the symbiotic relationship between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios ended in divorce. After failing to reach an agreement on financing terms for the Spider-Man movies, Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra said “the door is closed” on the wall-crawler in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
