House Republicans have added a plan to raise billions of dollars to help pay for US President Donald Trump’s massive tax cuts through the sale of thousands of acres of federal land — a politically charged idea that has drawn opposition from some in their own party.

The House Natural Resources Committee advanced the energy portion of Republicans’ reconciliation tax bill early Wednesday morning after a marathon markup, squeezing in one last-minute amendment ordering the sale of thousands of acres of public land.

The sales were approved as the Natural Resources committee voted 26-17 to advance legislation that would allow increased leasing of public lands for drilling, mining, and logging.
