India has expressed concerns over China’s plan to build a mega dam on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet, emphasizing the need for transparency and consultation with downstream states. The project, estimated at USD 137 billion,

China announced that it is building the world's largest dam in Tibet - even larger than the Three Gorges Dam, which according to NASA, has slowed the Earth's rotation by 0.06 seconds. The new dam will be built on the Brahmaputra river.

Sources said India was not informed by the Chinese side about the construction of the Brahmaputra dam project, which is the convention between the two countries, and learnt of it from media reports – the project is to cost an estimated $137 billion.

MEA also said that India has expressed its concern to China over the hydropower project on the Brahmaputra in Tibet, urging it to ensure the interests of the downstream states are not affected.

Concerns have been raised that the Chinese dam could negatively affect the ecological balance of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, through which the Brahmaputra River flows.
