In the first week of January 2025, several news outlets reported that a nurse in Virginia had been arrested on charges of malicious wounding and felony child abuse after several babies in her hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) suffered "unexplainable fractures ."

On Friday, Jan. 3, Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, 26, was arraigned on one count of felony child neglect and one count of felony malicious wounding for an injury sustained by an infant on or about Nov. 10, 2024, according to a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

The troubling series of events came to light when medical staff identified three infants with unusual fractures during late 2024.

The Washington Post reported that registered nurse Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman was arrested in connection with the abuse of several Black babies at a Virgina medical center. Beginning in 2023, officials at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital began noticing unexplained injuries among newborns in its neonatal intensive care unit.

Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, 26 is charged with malicious wounding and felony child abuse in connection to a November incident at the Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond, Henrico County Police said in a Jan. 3 news release. A spokesperson for HCA Healthcare told McClatchy News the woman was a former employee at the hospital.
