Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce as early as Monday that he will step down as leader of the ruling Liberal Party, Canadian media reports, ahead of a general election to be held later this year that he is widely expected to lose.

Trudeau, who is facing pressure from members of his own Liberal party to quit ahead of federal elections in Canada later this year, has been a target of frequent attacks from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

In mid-December, Chrystina Freeland, the deputy prime minister and head of finance, unexpectedly resigned citing disagreements over the handling of Trump’s suggested 25 percent tariffs on the country – an issue that could damage the economy of both countries.
