Honestly, I feel like your enjoyment of The Return depends on how much you enjoy Lynch's work as a whole, not necessarily how much you enjoyed the original run of Twin Peaks. I watched all of Twin Peaks, then started to watch Lynch's movies after. I really loved Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, and Eraserhead.

When the return aired, serialized tv was the norm now. Shows like Lost, Heroes, prison break and others like that were already airing to huge audiences with the “long movie” format. Twin peaks the return literally could exist in a format like that because of the trailblazing that twin peaks had on the television industry.
What does this sub think about Twin Peaks: The Return?
And, after thinking it about it nonstop, I’ve come to the conclusion that the hopeless, stomach turning feel is intentional. IMO you used the key-word to understanding all of Twin Peaks in your comment: balance. I read Twin Peaks as another Lynch work that meditates on the importance of balance - right and wrong, good and evil.
