Back in 1917 on October 31st the Australian Lighthorse charged and took Beersheba in what’s now Israel. It was the last time cavalry were used in a charge. But… they weren’t cavalry. They were mounted infantry. They would ride to the fight, dismount, then fight on foot. 107 years ago today, the last great cavalry charge took place in the battle of Beersheba on 31 October 1917, part of the wider British offensive collectively known as the third Battle of Gaza.
