It’s Red Wolf Awareness Week: Sept. 14 – 20, 2025 and the world’s most endangered wolf needs every ally they can get. Once ranging from Texas to Pennsylvania, the red wolf was declared extinct in the wild in 1980 after relentless hunting and habitat loss. Four pairs were reintroduced in North Carolina’s Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in 1987, and for a moment it worked—by 2006 more than 130 wolves roamed free.
