Built in 1861-62, the Swansea Workhouse in Mount Pleasant was where the poor, homeless and destitute lived in deliberately harsh conditions, working in exchange for basic food and shelter. Families were split up, conditions kept grim, and inmates forced to do gruelling tasks - all designed to make sure only the truly desperate would seek help.
